The team: Peter Kelly-Detwiler, Cabby Tennis, Clay Tennis, Nick Lefferts, Caleb Estabrooks, Brian Taylor, Sloane Graff and Andrew Gadbois are taking on the Wampanoag Canoe Trail Extreme Paddle Challenge.
Celebrate our local waters. Make a gift today to help our team meet our goal to help restore our rivers!
The team is doing its part by trekking through rugged terrain, paddling 72 miles over three-days (June 7-9) through an historic Native American water route that connects Massachusetts Bay and Narrangansett Bay along the North River and the Taunton River. They will likely be dodging poison ivy along the way! You can do your part by supporting the team with your gift. Your donation will be matched thanks to a generous donor, and will go a long way in helping to protect our local waters.
"For me this adventure started as an Eagle Scout with Norwell's Scout Troop 66 in junior high school. Then it was resurrected some 35 years later as a fundraiser for the NSRWA. If I add up all these paddling trips it’s well over 560 miles! The hardest part is probably the simple act of following one paddle stroke with the next, especially the 35 miles or more on the last day; but in a way, the harder it is the more fun it is, too. It's simply amazing to me that we are in the middle of the South Shore and yet at times we don't really know where we are. There is one swamp so dense that we occasionally drop a leaf in the water to see which way it flows so we know which way to push our canoes (to our waists)! We see lots of wildlife, snapping turtles, great blue herons, cormorants, owls, and deer. By the end of day three we are scratched and tired, looking forward to a cold drink and our own beds. I'd say the best part is the camaraderie of people doing something together to go from one point to the next. It's true fellowship!" ~ Peter Kelly-Detwiler
